PRESS: contribution in HLN by Sharryn-Chill Hermy about dividing lottery winnings after a divorce
In an article dated April 3, 2025 in Het Laatste Nieuws, our lawyer Sharryn-Chill Hermy provided legal clarification of a remarkable case in which a divorced couple had been litigating for sixteen years over a lottery win of €75,000. The Court of Appeal in Liège ultimately ruled in favor of the woman – a decision that, according to Sharryn-Chill, could have far-reaching consequences.
“Although the ticket was purchased after the de facto separation, the court ruled that the winnings still belonged to the joint assets,” Sharryn-Chill explains. “This verdict could set a dangerous precedent for future discussions about assets acquired between the de facto and official separation.”
The case shows how important it is to make clear agreements when ending a relationship – especially when it concerns money and property.
